On the Hobby Table: May 28th, more on contest and Episode 10!

Life has a way of creeping up on you does it not? Episode 10 is ready to be recorded, I just have not found the time to sit down and get my voice out to the interwebz. Thanks for your patience fellow hobby enthusiasts as there is a lot to talk about, Warhammer 6th edition, new "flyer" models and other GW kits as well as some big upcomming events in the area.

In the mean time I have been able to finish a few of my models this wych squad is finally "done". There is no detail that has not been picked out, each pack and grenade has a lick of paint on it. I am happy with the overall result and can move on to other units that also need some love: Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Anyhow. I also wanted to talk about the contest that Skared podcast will be running and how you can get involved. The full details will be explained on the next episode but I will be giving a 50dl boxed set (of the winners choice) away by raffle. Now listen and read for more details spread the word and maybe you will be the proud owner of some more snazzy stuff. I think that there will be one or two runner up prizes as well. If you cant wait for more information, comment below or send me an email.

Cheers!

Skared Battle Report: 1500pts Mechanized Blood Angels vs Dark Eldar Kabal

Here is another battle report for you all. This should hold you off untill I get the next episode up and running! Stay tuned! Enjoy:

Introduction:

I strolled into the Gaming store this past saturday, once again. This time I had a scheduled game all lined up. If you know my story I have just recently moved into the area so I am fairly new to the community. This means that I have been trying to find my niche spot within the gaming tiers of the area. Last time I was at the store one of the -twins- called me out for a game, he said he had heard I was a -decent- player and therefore wanted to have a game. I was flattered (of course) that my reputation had preceeded me :D . I had heard of the -twins- over the last month or so from various members of the gaming community and they are held in high regard when it comes to list buinding (using powerfull lists) and their generalship skills. And so, with this I set out my army and we rolled for the mission straight out of the book.

Mission? 4 Objectives

Deployment? Pitched

Location? Sir Games Alot in Barrie Ontario

The Table:

We made sure that there was enough terrain on the table this time, 25% and good LOS blockers. Then tried to mirror it as much as possible in an adepticon format.

The green markers are the primary objectives.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

The armies:

I was using the same tournament list that I have been using since I got here and had to drop to 1500pts. It is a strong DE list that has a lot of synergy and can catch people off guard if they are not careful. At a glance the list only has 2 venoms... but at close range (12inches) the army shells out almost 80 AI shots. Hence not needing to rely on the venoms, and boosting 15 AT weapons for decent tank busting capabilities. (with 18 grenades if the wyches get stuck in).

His list was a variation of Blood Angel razorback spam. Cheap squads, cheap HQ and then as many pts in firepower as possible. Of course this variation has adapted to the local meta and he has been using vindies rather than predators because of the prevailence of FNP and other foot troop armies in the area. The use of HK missiles was clearly because of certain DE players that love their night shields. At a distance he could target 6 different things a turn and then even more as soon as the fast vindicators got within range. So I was in for a fight!

Deployment:

After rolling again because we drew the first roll the Blood Angels took first turn and chose to deploy everything with the Baal in outflanking reserve.

He huddled his army in a off centre position threatening three of the 4 objectives and also had a flanking force on his far right to hold the far objective. No units roll red thirst.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Dark Eldar roll +1 str for drugs. Not wanting to rely on trying to sieze the initiative the Dark Eldar wisely reserve everything. If it all goes to plan even the Baal pred will show up before any of the DE reserves do. And there is enough terrain that if the army trickles on the Kabalites should be able to deal some damage and mitigate the brunt of the enemy shooting in return.

Turn 1

Blood Angels- To make the game go quicker, the Blood Angels decide not to move anything for turn 1. Only having the speeders move away (to then move them back into position but with a cover save for turn 2.

Dark Eldar- The Kabalites wait. The moment to strike is soon the Archon follows the enemy movements on his pics screens and heat-sensors. Waiting for a weakspot to appear, then the realspace raid will commence!

Turn 2

Blood Angels- The mechanized force shuffles. The lead tanks blow smoke. The Baal predator is hiding well in the bushes and does not arrive! The ambush is not yet sprung. The Blood Angels prepare for the Dark Eldar to arrive.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Dark Eldar- Rolled for reserves: Ravager, Scourge, 1 unit of jetbikes, 1 unit of wyches, the incubi and archon and both squads of warriors show up. (quite a lot, I was hoping for less)...

The Dark Eldar move onto my far lower left side of the table, he has left units unsuported on this side so I will overload it and hope to solidify my hold on the nearby objective. I boosted the reaver jetbikes up to entice the squad in the razorback to come out and charge them. Shooting saw the speeder stunned and that was it... I also moved the incubi (dark) and warrior (green) venoms behind the walls prepared to move out as needed, if the razorback squad took the bait the incubi would be able to take first blood.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Turn 3-

Blood Angels-  Reserves... the Baal predator fails to arrive once again! The large portion of the blood angel force shuffles further into his far left corner. Nothing is in LOS or range to shoot ( I was unsure of what he was doing here, putting more distance between us, maybe he was expecting me to play his game and just charge his lines?)

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

To my delight, the squad inside the razorback gets out! And prepares to charge the jetbikes. This means that the incubi will have something to charge next turn! The combat sees the jetbikes die but they did cause one casualty. The razorback fires its payload into the ravager and wrecks it on a lucky glancing hit!

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Dark Eldar- Reserves: The second jetbike unit arrives. And thats it (this leaves one Ravager and the other wych unit still to arrive). The jetbikes boost over the disembarked squad and kill another with their bladevanes. The incubi and the archon move up to assault the small squad. The rest of the army shuffles to prevent as much shooting as possible while manouvering for the central objectives and getting into position for the late game.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Shooting sees the speeder immobilized and stunned and the razorback immobilized... and that was all.

In combat the Incubi and archon make quick work of the 3 assault marines, gain their pain token, and consolidate into the crater fearing the plasmagun and lascannon on that razorback.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Turn 4-

Blood Angels- Reserves: The baal predator shows up on his far left, the side that I am pushing up the table. The mechanized block moved up at reasonable speed to bring a few more weapons to bear as well as prepare to get some units on the objectives turn 5. He wants to make me work for it, this is fine. His shooting sees the baal predator shoot at the wych raider, and blow it up! Wounding 8 and killing 6 of the wyches inside from the explosion. (ouchies!) Other shooting sees three of the scourge taken out as well by frag missiles. And then he shot as much as he could at the incubi venom and managed to only blow off its gun and stop it from shooting, he really wanted to strand the killy unit on the far side of the table. My units all passed their morale tests, thank goodness.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Dark Eldar- Roll for reserves, only the ravager moves on (the last wych unit will arrive turn 5) In movement my incubi do not roll high enough to all get within 2inches of their venom! So the Archon embarks and speeds off towards the Mechanized force. The incubi prepare to assault the land speeder. The Jetbikes line up the razorback on that flank and the remaining scourge (luckily with the 2 haywire blasters) engage the baal. The wyches move and run to hide begind the central wall. The ravager moves to engage the speeders and the raider warrior squad moves up to block the central objective with the raider and bring its blaster and the lance to bear. The other warrior unit moves to the corner objective.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Shooting sees one speeder down. And the lead razorback stunned (blocking the one behind and too far from the objective to score. The razorback, baal and speeder are stunned, and charged, not much else happens with the grenades and close combat attacks.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Turn 5-

Blood Angels- The army advances. The unit close to the objective moves out to take the one near their razorback. The vindicators line up some shots and the surviving speeder boosts over to contest the central objective. Shooting sees the raider in the centre dead, and 2 of the 5 warriors (including the blaster) die in the explosion. Then firther shooting at them forces them to go to ground to survive. The ravager survives a vindicator shot as well. The venom with the archon also receives much shooting and once again survives with only the second splinter cannon gone! They pass their morale. The librarian and squad move to try and take the other objective on his far right if the game continues. As it stands he is tying up the game. In combat (with the tanks from before nothing really happens)

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Dark Eldar- The last unit of wyches arrives. And moves to my far right, facing off against the librarians razorback. As it stands all I needed to do was contest his objective and if the game ended I won. So I kept the wyches conservatively back to use them to push on the objective if needed on turn 6. The venom with the archon darted up and he disembarked, with a half decent run he would be in combat with the squad on the objective contesting it. I also moved the depleeted wyches up to attempt to charge the land speeder and bring it down if I could. I also moved the venoms and the ravager as well as the jetbikes to create a wall to prevent any contesting on turn 6 from the vindys or the remaining razorbacks.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Shooting saw the librarians razorback stunned. And the speeder unharmed. I then charged in with the wyches into the speeder and the archon into the assault squad, if this was time to not have him flub his attacks... it was this time.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

As the dust of combat settled, the archon had killed 2 marines and lived! And the wyches had landed a hit with a haywire grenade and glanced but only managed to stunn the speeder. As it stood I held one objective to his zero.

We rolled for the game to continue.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Roling a 1 and it was over!

Victory to the Dark Eldar.

Conclusions:

Well, that was one fast paced game. My opponent was quick to note that I had one my just the one objective. I replied that one is all it takes. And this is true, sometimes people forget that you only need to win by that one objective in order to take the game and they try and take as many as they can. It it good to threaten as many as possible but at the end of the day the one you hold and the ones the enemy does not are what counts.

I did note that my opponent was not as aggressive as I think he could have been, he held back and was reluctant to advance on my forces. I have seen him just sit in a corner and blast people off the table but of course hi opponents seem to just run at him. There were a few lucky instances for me that game, with the archons venom surviving two turns of dedicated shooting (I did fail all other saves on my other tanks so it adds up :P ) and this allowed the archon to get to the other side of the table and ultimately prevent the tie.

Man of the match? - I would have to go with my Archon, as it was him that contested the enemy objective.

My opponents best moment? - Well, there were two, one was when by exploding the wych raider he rolled 8 wounds (out of 9 wyches) and then, later in the game, when he blew the warrior raider up and the explosion wounded all 5 warriors that had just disembarked, this led to the death of the blaster.

Thanks a lot for reading I hope you enjoyed it. If you liked it make sure you check out the other stuff I do (links in sig).

Cheers!

Battle Report: Dark Eldar vs Space Marines 1500pts

Introduction:

Welcome to a Skaredcast Battle report! I had the pleasure of going down to Sir Games A Lot in Barrie this saturday for a game of 40K. The mission? Annihilation. The deployment? Pitched. This is usually called the good ol 4th edition mission! The table was already layed out when we arrived and we decided that it would do. There is one major houserule in effect, forests block LOS. Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

The Armies:

On to the armies, my opponent was Daniel. I Just met him that day and he had just finished a game with his all bike marine list, he was staying for a while and challenged me to another game, as he pulled out another list he had prepared for the day:

Deployment:

The spacemarines won the roll to go first. And decided to take the first turn, he deployed in a very balanced fashion with a heavier force towards his fight flank.

Because of the sparcity of terrain on the table, and because this was a tournament practice game the Dark Eldar reserved everything. Hoping that they could do as much damage as possible as they arrived.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Turn 1

Top - Space Marines

With no enemy in sight the space marines choose to advance. My opponent blew smoke on his rhinos, and I kindly reminded him that I would have nothing arriving first turn and he would be wasting the smoke. At a tournament I would have let this big mistake fly. And with that, the battle had begun!

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Bottom - Dark Eldar

All dark eldar units are off the table at the moment.

Turn 2

Space Marines

The Space Marines push further up the table, hoping to overload the dark eldar with threats. The rhinos blow smoke and prepare for the raiders to arrive.

Dark Eldar

Rolling for reserves: Both units of 5 man warriors arrive, a jetbike unit and a wych unit. The Dark Eldar decide to deploy most on their own right flank, facing off against the vindicator and speeder, this means that the other vindy and tac squads would have to move again to support that flank. The wych raider arrives behind the LOS blocking forest as bait and to bring their haywire grenades to the fight next turn. Shooting from the dark eldar sees the vindicator immobilized (but still able to shoot) And that.... was all.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Turn 3

Space Marines

The Space Marines manuver into better positions. Shooting from all the space marine arsenal sees a penetrating hit on the warrior raider... flicker field! The shot is ignored... The vindicator fires into the clump of enemy dark eldar in front of him, but only manages to kill one warrior. The other land speeder fires into the jetbikes, but does not kill anyone.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Dark Eldar

Rolling for reserves: The other jetbikes, scourge, incubi and archon, and one ravager arrive (leaving one unit of wyches and the other ravager still off table) The newly arrived jetbikes move into position to use their fancy heatlance (str6 melta, lance ap1) against the land raider, the wyches that had been behind the forest get out to try and assault the terminators (or the tank itself if it fails) as many lances that the dark eldar could muster lock on to the central rhino to hope to pop it for the incubi and archon to assault them, the scourge reenforce the right flank and the jetbikes move up to try and kill the vindicator.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

So, the heatlance failed to kill the Land raider... it hit, but rolled a combined pen value of 10... ouch. The wyches then assaulted the LR and the rhino... they needed 6es to hit with the grenades an managed to immobilize and stunn the land raider. The lances failed to do anything to the central rhino... the incubi and archon had to charge the rhino, but succeded in immobilizing and stunning it! On the right flank, the reaver jetbikes stuned the vindicator... and charged it, and failed to do anything more. The scourge shot and stunned the land speeder.

Turn 4 Kill point count... still SM 0 - DE 0!

Space Marines

The terminators can't get out of the land raider without having to emergency disembark... the land raider fires at the wyches and melts a few of them. The vindicator on his right flank, hits the jetbikes, causes a casualty and makes them fall off the table in fear. The occupants of the central rhino, surrounded by incubi stay put. Shooting sees the other typhoon fire at one of the venoms and once again! Flicker field! (best upgrade ever). On the other flank the wych raider wrecks to the melta and rocket launcher from the rhino squad next to the land raider.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

In combat the incubi, take out the storm bolter from the rhino they are in combat with, and the reaver jetbikes blow off the vindicators gun. The Wyches blow off the redeemer flamer cannons in combat and wreck up the rhino nearby! Woot! The tac squad inside is pinned.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Dark Eldar

The last reserves arrive and get stuck in right away. The incubi move back from the rhino ready to charge in again, and the reserve wych squad comes in a central position to help out with any assault that may happen. The 2 Ravagers aim at the LR, because it is a friendly game I do not want to surround the LR and wreck it in combat... The scourge and reavers continue to take on the speeder and vindicator on the right flank but only succeed in stunning and shaking and blowing off weapons... In the centre the rhino with the tac squad explodes! And the explosion kills 4 out of 9 wyches (ouchies) The venoms target the pinned squad and succeed in killing 2 of the marines. (enough to prevent them from falling back) the ravagers fail against the land raider... so the remaining wyches line up a charge.

And then the Dark Eldar charge! Incubi, Archon and wyches into the tac squad, and the other wyches into the Land Raider.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

The Tactical squad in the mid table gets wiped out but the incubi. They gain their first pain token. The wyches succeed in blowing up the Land Raider, this is good as it allows the terminators to continue to fight. The explosion kills a few wyches.

So, this is what the board looked like at the end of turn 4... the first kill points have been taken! (finally!)

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Turn 5 Kill point count SM - 1 DE - 5

Space Marines

The space marines need to pick up the pace. The Librarian and his elite terminators take on the wyches that are near them:

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

The busted vindicator makes its way towards the centre table hoping to tank shock and ram its way to victory!

The avenger makes short work of all but the one Hekatrix. Who then gets charged by the terminators.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

And dies a horrible hideus death under a flurry of thunderhammers. In other combats the land speeder on the far right is immobilized and the vindicator continues to be stunned.

Dark Eldar:

The dark kin move towards the remaining pocket of Space Marine resistance:

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

Shooting sees most of the firing target the terminators, klling all but 2 of them. I finally knock out the land speeder on the far right and the rogue vindicator is immobilized.

The wyches try and make it to the terminators and fail... the incubi run into the tac squad and kill all but one rocket launcher (after no retreat wounds, the power fist failed to hit the incubi).

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

The battle is currently heavily in the Dark Eldar favour. The Spacemarines hold on, will the game continue? It does!

Turn 6

Space Marines:

The terminator and librarian split up to attempt to bring in as many kill points as possible! Avenger frys the entire unit of wyches in the open. The Terminators assault the incubi and Archon, with avenger up the terminators are hoping to knock out the Archon. The archon and 2 incubi direct their attacks on the terminators... and kill them both! The storm shields fail to save them from the flurry of power weapons. The Other two eliminate the last tactical marine. This awards them their last two pain tokens for a very nasty Archon all hopped up on pain!

Dark Eldar:

As the game has been pretty much decided, the Archon decides to charge in to the librarian with his elite retinue! To hand to hand combat... with furious charge they succeed in doing!... nothing. The librarian has survived! (in mop up news, the remaining DE forces kill off the two vindys.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

With the librarian fighting for his life we roll for turn 7. And it Happens.

Turn 7

Space Marines:

The Librarian attacks the incubi after making all his saves! And once again fails to do any damage...

Dark Eldar:

The Incubi attacks finally make it through the Librarians storm shield! And knock him down.

Uploaded by Photobucket Mobile for BlackBerry

And with that, the battle is over.

Conclusions

This was a fun game. From the get go it was interesting how nothing happened! (the first kill points did not happen until turn 4).

I felt that the Space Marine player was too aggessive with his army and played right into the Dark Eldars hand. But I do give it to him for sticking out until the bitter end. If I were him I would have stayed back and forced the dark eldar to move up the table using the LOS blocking forest to hide the land speeders untill they would have been able to strike.

It has been a long while since I have written up a text battle report! I hope it was ok. Please comment and help me bring you improved content. You can also check out the podcast and youtube channel for more.

Cheers, and thanks for reading.

On the Hobby Table: Finecast woes.

Hello fellow hobbyists and gamers, welcome to todays installment. First entry in May! May the 4th be with you all. :D

So, a few things I would like to write about today. First off:

The new citadel releases from their finecast range... well. What I have purchased. I know this is a topic that is brought up a lot and it debated over and over on the interwebs but because this has now affected me more than not its time to actually get it off my chest.

First off let me say I have a love hate relationship with Citadel Finecast. I -love- working with resin a million times over than with metal, its easier to clean the detail is crisp its light and paint sticks to it better. Its also easier to convert meaning that you are not bound to just a few poses if you dont have greenstuff skills and a saw... Hence, from a practical perspective I love resin and it goes witout saying that when the product is in great shape, its awesome.

So, now on to the more negative part of this article... when finecast is bad... its -terrible-. Now, I like the fact that GW has decent customer service and when I have called in a faulty product they have sent me a replacement. What annoys me is when the replacement is also fail and then the customer service rep then questions my motives... I want a product that is not full of bubbles thank you very much! Now this has not been an issue with me in the past but dang! Lately I have had the absolute worst luck with the finecast that I have purchased so here is a list of what has been horrible:

Grotesque, and the two replacements that they sent me, I got tired of them sending me bad models so I told them to just send me some greenstuff!

5 wracks... then the replacement box was also garbage.. I am waiting for the second round of replacements to arrive. Literally these are THE WORST that I have ever had to deal with... unsalvagable really. holes everywhere, and I do mean everywhere!

Urien (DE special character) waiting for a replacement now.

Dark Eldar Medusae.

Anyhow, just wanted to put this out there as I am a little frustrated and I really hope that I get some better models, for example the Lhamean that I got is gorgeus! Crisp lines and great detail.

The second thing I wanted to talk about was episode 10. It is under way and on schedule, and should be released next week I am currently trying to fix some editing issues that I have had with the sound when I add music to the podcast I hope to have that sorted out to help your wonderful ears.

Thanks a lot for reading.

Stay tuned! If you want more you can follow me on twitter@skari2, send me emails comment share and like, ratings also help out, so you do what you do and I appreciate it.

Cheers! Skari-Out
